How it’s made

Imagine having to hand pollinate a Vanilla orchid by hand,  on the one day of the year it blooms. This is how our our Vanilla oil starts. 

After hand-pollination, the Vanilla beans take 8—9 months to fully develop, and it takes three to four years for the vanilla plant to begin producing beans that also must be harvested by hand.

The beans are ground into small pieces and, to preserve the natural vanilla aroma, pressurized CO2 is used in a two-step extraction process that captures the aromatic constituents from the beans to create the absolute. We combine this absolute with Fractionated Coconut Oil and the result is doTERRA Madagascar Vanilla.

Beyond just harvesting the oil. Supporting the community

Our partner is focused on traceability, sustainability, and ethical production in Madagascar.  Through our Cō-Impact Sourcing®, and our  the dōTERRA Healing Hands Foundation®, we  support the funding of the Mahadera Agricultural Training Center. 

This center, built and operated by our partners, offers a three-year farm training for the children of Vanilla farmers, which teaches important skills, such as crop diversification and financial management. This training provides access to further education opportunities and a more secure future, for themselves and their families.

We all are supporting the communities where the plants where our oils are sourced from. It truly blows my mind all we are doing, while simply wanting a solution for our own lives.
